b) Upon meeting the unit cost, if specified for that particular challenge.

According to Jurong Survey Conducted during FY 16-17, the Green coverage of Jamshedpur city is around 37% (23.68 Sq. Km) against the standard requirement of 33% as per Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF).

The type of trees found are mostly:

Tabebuia Spe., Dalbergia sissoo, Putranjiva Spe., Azadirchta Indica, Mangifera Indica, Mimusops elengi, Ficus Spe., Cassia Fistula, Spathodia, Lagerstroemia Spe., Tectona grandis, Alstonia scholaris, Peltophorum Spe., Melia azedarach, Pongamia pinnata, Cassia siama, Pithecellobium dulce, Swietenia mahagoni, Syzygium cumini, Neolamarckia cadamba, Pterospermum acerifolium.

Some of the trees are 50 - 100 years old. Jamshedpur falls in the termite belt area and the soil is lateritic. Because of this, trees have become weak due to termite infestation. The average rainfall is around 1200mm (47 inch) and typically monsoon season lasts around 3 months (July, August, September). As a result, during heavy storm and monsoon season, there is an imminent danger that trees could fall unexpectedly, which may cause injuries to public or damage property.

A solution is therefore sought that will enable us to predict the health of trees which are more likely to get uprooted or fall during storm and/or heavy rain, so that adequate precautions can be taken proactively.

By knowing the tree health status, we can

  • Minimize safety hazard to people.
  • Minimize property damage.

Options tried to solve before:

  • Avoided plantation of Peltophorum tree species.
  • Proactive tree trimming and cutting on the basis of physical survey only.

The solution MUST fulfil the following requirements:

  1. Complete mapping of trees across the town with following features: -
  • Health status whether the roots of the tree is healthy or not
  • Tree trunk strength status
  • Life span of the tree
  1. Should not be labor intensive
  2. There should be an interface/dashboard, where the health status of the trees is displayed locality wise
  3. Continuous updation of the data
  4. Cost effective
  5. Easy to install/implement
