Silt & sediments occupy the water storage space which has to be removed for additional water storage.
The major water bodies (lakes and basins) supplying water to the city are fed with rainwater, surface water, river water and treated sewage water. This runoff water comes through nearby catchment areas and carries a substantial volume of silt on its way to the lakes and settles at the bottom of the lake (Siltation). This is a natural process and happens every year causing increased concentration & accumulation of suspended sediments & fine sediments at the bottom. The gradual and continuous deposition over time causes reservoir siltation and reduces storage capacity as well as water availability which may reduce the reservoir lifetime and cause problems with water quality.
Thus, we are seeking cost-effective solutions for accurately determining the siltation depth in these water bodies, so that desilting exercise can be planned.
