Eliminating LPG flame curtains in Annealing furnaces

Gold jewellery annealing is performed in a furnace with a 75% hydrogen and 25% nitrogen atmosphere, where LPG flame curtains are used at the entry to prevent oxygen ingress during loading and unloading. There is a need to eliminate the use of flame curtains without compromising product quality, process stability, or safety. The solution must prevent oxidation, integrate with the existing setup, and enable safe, continuous operation within current spatial and retrofit constraints.

Reward money is paid in exchange of legally acquiring the solution, implementing it to solve the problem and meeting the success criteria. Milestones for paying the reward money would depend upon the complexity of challenge and maturity of the proposed solution, which would be discussed with the solver as soon as the proposed solution is selected by us.

Challenge details:

Annealing of gold jewellery articles is performed in a furnace operating under a controlled atmosphere of 75% hydrogen and 25% nitrogen to ensure optimal material properties and surface quality. At the furnace entry, LPG-based flame curtains are used as a critical protective barrier to prevent oxygen ingress, thereby avoiding oxidation and blackening of the jewellery, as well as mitigating safety risks arising from hydrogen-air interaction. These flame curtains are activated during the loading and unloading of jewellery articles, ensuring the integrity of the furnace atmosphere throughout these operations.

We are seeking innovative, safe, and cost-effective solutions to eliminate the use of LPG flame curtains in the annealing furnace. Any proposed alternative must effectively prevent oxygen ingress, maintain a stable non-oxidizing environment, and ensure consistent product quality, while integrating seamlessly with the existing furnace configuration. The solution should enable continuous operation with minimal downtime, function within existing space and retrofit limitations, and operate safely in a hydrogen-rich environment.
